چکیده

When a microcantilever with a nanoscale tip is scanned laterally over a surface to measure the nanoscale frictional forces, the onset of stick-slip tip motions is an extremely important phenomenon that signals the onset of lateral friction forces. In this article, we investigate theoretically the influence of tip and microcantilever compliance on this phenomenon. We show that static considerations alone cannot predict uniquely the onset of single or multiple atom slip events. Instead, the nonlinear dynamics of the tip during a slip event need to be carefully investigated to determine if the tip evolves to a single or multiple atom stick-slip motions. The results suggest that the relative compliances of the tip and microcantilever can be engineered to induce single or multiple atom stick-slip events and thus control lateral friction forces at the nanoscale.

The Roles of Statics and Dynamics in Determining Transitions Between Atomic Friction Regimes

We introduce a model AFM tip/substrate system that includes full atomistic detail as well as system compliance to study the transitions between three regimes of atomic friction: smooth sliding, stick-single slip, and stick-multiple slip. We characterize these atomic friction regimes in terms of static and dynamic effects, and investigate how the slip modes affect the mean friction. Molecular st...

Thermal effects on atomic friction.

We model friction acting on the tip of an atomic force microscope as it is dragged across a surface at nonzero temperatures. We find that stick-slip motion occurs and that the average frictional force follows (absolute value lnv)(2/3), where v is the tip velocity. This compares well to recent experimental work, permitting the quantitative extraction of all microscopic parameters. We calculate t...

Velocity dependent friction laws in contact mode atomic force microscopy.

Friction forces in the tip-sample contact govern the dynamics of contact mode atomic force microscopy. In ambient conditions typical contact radii between tip and sample are in the order of a few nanometers. In order to account for the large interaction area the dynamics of contact mode atomic force microscope (AFM) is investigated under the assumption of a multi-asperity contact interface betw...

Nanoscale friction: Distorted by the tip.

When two macroscopic bodies in contact slide, energy is dissipated. However, at the nanoscale, tiny amounts of energy can also be dissipated when the sliding bodies are not in contact with each other. Such non-contact form of friction — the origin of which has been associated with van der Waals (vdW) forces — has been measured with highly sensitive atomic force microscopy (AFM). In a friction f...

Features of static and dynamic friction profiles in one and two dimensions on polymer and atomically flat surfaces using atomic force microscopy

In this paper we correlate the Atomic Force Microscope probe movement with surface location while scanning in the imaging and Force versus distance modes. Static and dynamic stick-slip processes are described on a scale of nanometres to microns on a range of samples. We demonstrate the limits and range of the tip apex being fixed laterally in the force versus distance mode and static friction s...
